Tasmania Travel Notes
February 11-27, 2025
About the Trip
Visas: We
used Australia's Online Visa System
https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/visitor-600/tourist-stream-overseas
Travel Arrangements:
We made most of the trip's arrangements
ourselves online. (Google Flights, Airline websites, Booking.com, Agoda,
Klook, Trip Advisor, etc).
Attached is a PDF of our overall
plan.
DIY Travel:
Tasmania was easy to travel in. We used a car booking site
(not the big name car rental companies) to book a small car for the trip.
Then (mostly) Booking.com to book our overnights, starting and ending with a
hostel in Hobart.
Best Time to Go to
Tasmania: Their summer is northern winter, so anytime from
about Oct-March. We did not want to go over Christmas, as we assumed
that would be high season, and everything booked up.
Time Zone:
Tasmania is on Australian Eastern Daylight time +11 UTC.
Money: All
Australian dollars (AUD). ATMs in airports and every town.
Credit cards accepted everywhere. The USD is worth about 1.25 AUD.
Cell Sims & Internet:
We got our sims on layover in Melbourne Airport.
Booking Hotels:
We mostly used Booking.com, unless someone gave us the
name of a recommended hotel, and then we would search for a direct booking
site online. (ie, the hotel's own website). The booking sites take
around 15% of the booking price, and control your interaction with the hotel
(ie, you must communicate thru the app, not directly). This control
issue can get problematic, and a direct booking gives more of your $$ to the
actual hotel owner vs the advertising site.
