Racing Fast Lane in 2004
In 2004 and 2005, I was 'distance dating' a guy who lived in Pittsburgh, PA. Every 3 weeks or so, one of us would travel to the other's place and we'd hang out.
Rob wasn't that into racing, so racing again took a back seat. I tried to schedule our visits around the racing schedule, and managed to catch all the major regattas. But I was already starting to focus on the next phase of my life.
I participated still in most of the MYC Rum Races, but missed enough that I never again placed in a Rum Race series (missing one race will knock you out, no matter how well you do in all the other races).
Jim Yates had just bought Rookey and taken a third of my crew with him. Ralph and Winnie got married and quit racing (another 3rd of my crew). And Jen and Dean moved to Colorado (another 3rd of my crew). After a pretty good year in 2003, our results were pretty mediocre this year.
This was also the year of the 4 major hurricanes in Florida,
(see Rum Race fall results below), which really impacted life in Melbourne
for a number of months afterward. Fast Lane rode out the hurricanes at
the MYC dock in Melbourne Harbor, with no damage at all (somewhat due to the
during-the-hurricane heroics of Jack Leahy that saved the MYC docks).
